Dealing with Drugs & Alcohol

A practical guide to Drug and Alcohol awareness, Drugs Education and Intervention

Reasons for attending this programme
The use of Drugs and Alcohol amongst young people is widespread and now most colleges have policies in place relating to substance use on campus.  However, drug and alcohol use outside of college can seriously impact on young peoples’ lives and significantly affect a student’s ability to succeed in college.  College responsibilities under ‘Every Child Matters’, in particular relating to staying safe and being healthy means that this issue needs to be addressed both through tutorial education and at times on a one to one basis.

Many tutors and teachers feel ill-equipped to deal with the issue of drugs and alcohol use among students and are unsure as to how to respond when students raise the subject.  Staff need to have up to date and accurate information and the skills and strategies to handle this challenging area.

What is this training about?
This event provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the current situation regarding drug and alcohol use and provides practical strategies to enable staff to cope in a range of situations where substances are involved.

During this programme you learn:

  • An understanding of the national picture relating to drug and alcohol use among young people
  • The primary and secondary effects of drug use
  • Ways to develop drug and alcohol education programmes within tutorials
  • Key skills needed to help and support young people with substance related problems
  • How to link with other organisations which can help young people

Impact

  • Tutors and teachers are better equipped to deal with substance related issues
  • Staff are more confident in talking with students in tutorials and one to one settings
  • Students are more able to make informed choices for their own safety and well being
